But these side effects are temporal and usually quickly go away. All side effects depend on type of medicine, your doctor have prescribed for you. SSRIs include medicines such as citalopram (brand name: Celexa), escitalopram (brand name: Lexapro), fluoxetine (brand name: Prozac), paroxetine (brand name: Paxil), sertraline (brand name: Zoloft). These drugs act only on the neurotransmitter serotonin.
This group of antidepressants has fewer side effects than antidepressants of other groups. Headache, dry mouth, insomnia, sexual problems, nausea and nervousness are among the most common side effects that can be caused by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Those who take fluoxetine may also have a feeling of being unable to sit still. Sertraline may cause diarrhea.
Tricyclics
Tricyclics include nortriptyline (brand names: Aventyl, Pamelor)amitriptyline (brand name: Elavil), imipramine (brand name: Tofranil), desipramine (brand name: Norpramin). The group of drugs act on both serotonin and another neurotransmitter, norepinephrine. They may also interact with other chemicals throughout the body.
The possible side effects that may be caused by Tricyclics include blurred vision, dry mouth, difficulty urinating, impaired thinking, tiredness and worsening of glaucoma. Tricyclics are generally not prescribed people who have heart troubles as the drugs of this group can also affect a person's blood pressure and heart rate.
Other Antidepressants
There are also some other types of antidepressants that are less commonly used than Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or Tricyclics. This group includes: bupropion, mirtazapine, nefazadone, trazodone, venlafaxine. There also exist monoamine oxidize inhibitors (MAOIs) but they are rarely used nowadays.
Venlafaxine (brand name: Effexor) can cause anxiety, constipation, dry mouth, headache, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, increased cholesterol levels, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, sexual problems, tiredness and weight loss. People who take Nefazodone (brand name: Serzone) can experience headaches, dizziness, constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth, nausea, and tiredness.
Some of the most common side effects in people taking Bupropion (brand name: Wellbutrin) are agitation, headache, insomnia, and nausea.
Some of the most common side effects of Mirtazapine (brand name: Remeron) are increased appetite, dizziness,sedation, dry mouth, weight gain, and constipation.
Trazodone (brand name: Desyrel) can cause dry mouth, sedation, and nausea.
MAOI antidepressants (phenelzine (brand name: Nardil) and tranylcypromine (brand name: Parnate)) usually cause headaches, dizziness, tremor and weakness.
If you don’t want to have some unpleasant side effects, you shouldn’t drink alcohol, when you take antidepressants.
If you’re pregnant or nursing, you are generally not recommended to take these medicines. Antidepressants can affect other medicines, you’re taking. It is important to inform your doctor about other drugs, you take, including over-the-counter medicines and herbal health products. You should remember that taking some medicines together can cause serious problems.
